The So Called Heroes of Autism Part 4

These articles have been somewhat difficult to write, so this will be the final instalment of this series of posts, for now anyway. For anyone who has just come across this series you can see access Part one on Andrew Wakefield, part two on Jeff Bradstreet and part three on Kerri Rivera. In bringing these posts to you I have looked into the face of pure evil. Thought about what I would categorise as the worst of the worst, those that would destroy children for the feathering of their own nests. It is a tragic situation and I look forward to moving on to writing on some different topics. I thank you for sticking with the horror to get through them.

Today we consider a so called hero, who it seems, really does believe she is a hero. This woman is an absolute disgrace to the human race. She is surely under some kind of delusional state with the things she says and does. She has been known by various names over the years, but she is most well known by the moniker Amanda Mary Jewell.

It’s hard to know where to start with this particular monster. Her life is jam packed mine full of horror. Needless to say she is no hero. She is in fact a person that has been involved in the abuse of people with cancer and autistic people without any seeming presence of conscience. Even a shallow level investigation Amanda’s life yields some horrifying results.

Amanda calls herself a cancer researcher with more than fifteen years of experience. However a search of any reputable sources of scholarly information will yield zero results that have anything to do with Amanda. I have attempted to request some information about her research and so far the only information I have managed to get hold of is her referencing her blog. Now there are many blogs that contain good information and quality writing, however research it is not. I did contact Amanda via twitter at @AmandaMJewell asking her to provide her credentials as a researcher, but alas I received no reply. Actually there was a response though, the response of being blocked from accessing her tweets.

She blogs at a couple of places, but the most prominent is Mother Nature and You. This is full of all kinds of rubbish and pseudo science, and, of course a good dose of conspiracy theory. There is much present in her ravings and rantings about the evils of vaccines and their causing of all kinds of diseases. Of course is the presence of a conviction that they are utterly responsible for Autism. Here’s a video showing what she thinks about vaccines.

You can’t make this shit up. This is the stuff this woman says and promotes. But onto more serious issues.

Until quite recently, curiously the timing coinciding with the exposure of Leonardo Edwards by the BBC investigation and the conviction of MMS seller Daniel Smith, Amanda was sprucing MMS on her website. She seems to have got her start as a member of the Genesis 2 church, the non religious church of so called health and healing headed up by the self-proclaimed alien Jim Humble — I kid you not.

Amanda did have at some point a falling out and so-called ex-communication from the church through her opposition to Kerri Rivera’s enemas with MMS. Not a problem with MMS itself, it seems Amanda was quite ok with poisoning via the mouth, just not via the back passage. In the intervening time Amanda has jumped onto a new bandwagon. She has not resiled from MMS being a wonderful miracle healing agent at all but now there is another product that is just such a wonderful compliment to the so called Miracle cure. Curious, really, surely it is either a miracle healing agent or it isn’t. Surely two miracle products are not needed?

In tweets recently, those I was able to see prior to being blocked, Amanda wrote glowingly of Kerri and her so called miracle recoveries through her use of MMS. It appears that Kerri too has jumped onto the new bandwagon, perhaps a new alliance has been formed.

This product in question is known as GcMaf. A live blood product which is unregulated and unapproved and bloody darn expensive. A single vial is hundred of euros to purchase. The question has been raised into the ingredients of this GcMaf that has highlighted the likely presence of Bovine blood in the product. This product is administered through painful intramuscular injections.

This product is far from safe. And it seems that Amanda is somewhat on the run because of it. However this has not stopped her selling her product wherever and whenever she can. Recently her home was the subject of a raid by the MHRA in the UK for hosting a Genesis 2 MMS gathering, the same Genesis 2 church she is supposedly no longer a part of, just happened to be using her home.

Since then she has spent time on the Island of Dominica seemingly hiding, and made quite a drama about how the media there were hounding her and she was like a prisoner there. The reality was that Autistic advocates had made some discreet contact with the media their giving them a simple heads up of the activities she was involved in and the likely reason for her being on the island of setting up some kind of cowboy clinic for this GcMaf treatment.

It is not the first time that she has been involved in this kind of thing at all. She was involved in a flight from Bulgaria where she and her husband Doug, ran another of these clinics. The clinic was in a hotel and was certainly the subject of controversy. There were two deaths that occurred at her clinic there. Whether these deaths were the direct result of the treatment provided by Amanda, or not. But what is known is that the people involved were in, I believe end stage cancer and were denied the provision of any standard pain killers to assist them.

It appears that Amanda and Doug made a dash for it before they could be held to account for whatever their role may have been. I am not saying that they are responsible, but it is certainly a curious and suspicious situation indeed. There are reports available in the Bulgarian press that detail the known details of the situation.

one thing is certain about Amanda and that is that she does not choose to do things according to the regulations and requirements of where she does her business. Indeed she uses deceit and trickery to make it appear that she is out of jurisdiction. On the website she runs to sell GcMaf First Pro Engineering, the company address is listed as being in Bulgaria, however it details the use of the UK Royal mail and lists a UK telephone contact number. Clearly a case of obfuscation at the very least.

Amanda is convinced that she knows all there is to know about Autism, yet, she tweets nastily about how certain advocates have no empathy and are unable to understand because they are autistic. She is unable to comprehend herself that in fact being autistic is simply a neurological difference and not a disease. Of course this is of no consequence to her as what she is really interested in doing is making money from her quack treatments on the backs of vulnerable and desperate people.

Amanda comes off with a soft and friendly manner and attempts to portray a caring and loving image, yet the nasty side of her has been very evident in her communications with advocates like Fiona O’leary and Emma Dalmayne, she has openly ridiculed knowledgable Phd students and compared them to Kindergarten students. This woman is not full of any love and light, as she signs off her tweets, but is full of danger and horror. One would be well advised to steer very clear of her.

This brings to a close this series of posts. And one thing is clear, none of these people in question are heroes of autism, they are in fact villains of autism. They gain wealth on the backs of the desperation and vulnerability of people who believe they need to recover their children from autism. They do so with an eye on nothing but their own success. They do so with no concern of the dire consequences the will occur for the victims of their crimes.

The more I have thought about this over the process of these articles, the more I am convinced that the narrative of the media and the autism peak bodies like Autism Speaks in America, The National Autistic Society in the UK and Aspect and Amaze in Australia must take a level of responsibility for this. It is the negative narrative, the patholigising and characterising autistic children as lost, locked away, intellectually incompetent, and unable to make their way in the world that has in fact created the market in that these monsters have been able to operate in.

I thank you for bearing with these posts and making your way through them. I hope they have been somewhat informative and a jumping off point to find out more, or to at the very least be wary of the treatments that are pushed for so called recovery and curing of autism.

Stay tuned for something of a different nature to be forthcoming.

So called heroes of Autism — part 2

In a recent post I wrote about the so called hero but in actual fact monster Dr Wakefield. You can read the post here. Welcome to part two in this series of postings dealing with some notorious figures within the Autism industry. Because it is an industry, and it is an industry that is all about selling false hope, quack treatments and the abuse of autistic people. This may seem harsh but if you look at these figures with even a cursory glance it is very easy to see the underhanded strategies, the selling of false hope, the fudging with the truth in order to get people to sign on to their so called treatments.

As stated previously we considered Dr Wakefield the discredited and deregistered author of the study that set off the blame game of vaccinations causing autism. A point I neglected to mention in considering his research in that post was to mention the fact that along with all the other questionable things in the duration of his research was the interesting tidbit that Dr Wakefield had an application for an alternative MMR vaccine patent. Clearly he had a vested interest in discovering something wrong with the current MMR vaccine as it stood.

Onward we go to our next notorious figure, the late and not great Dr Jeff Bradstreet. In late June Bradstreet was found dead from what appears to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The death of any person is a tragedy, and let me be clear I do not write here to speak ill of the deceased and to jump on the grave of someone who is unable to defend themselves.

However, death does not exlclude one from critique and it needs to be said the work of this man is nothing less of horrific.

Bradstreet has in fact been characterised as a hero by the anti-vaccination movement and has been a vocal proponent of the discredited vaccine causing Autism theory. He has published questionable research however it has not stood to critique. According to the website quack watch:

Jeff Bradstreet, M.D. has been described by his fans as a “cutting edge doctor” who specialized in treating autistic children. However, a Special Master of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims who looked closely at Bradstreet’s work concluded that he habitually misdiagnosed and mistreated autistic children [1]. The 293-page report, issued in 2009, dissected Bradstreet’s management of Colten Snyder, whose family — based on the belief that vaccines caused the boy to develop autism — had petitioned the court for compensation . The court ruled that no such connection existed. This article highlights the Special Master’s observations. that Bradstreet had improperly diagnosed and treated Colten for “mercury toxicity.

The above linked article is well worth reading to discover just how outrageous the practices and processes in which Bradstreet was engaged in his so-called treating of Autism. He is roundly criticised for his questionable diagnosis, and even more questionable treatments.

Bradstreet performed a plethora of questionable therapies, one of which known as Chelation, which is a treatment to remove heavy metals from a persons system. Bradstreet performed this treatment on Colten Snyder, even though the presence of mercury, the so called cause of autism, was not present in a treatable quantities.

The list of treatments that Bradstreet used included, as mentioned, Chelation, as well as, GcMaf, Hyperbaric Oxygen chamber, Stem Cell, Faecal implants. In addition to this whilst I am unaware of his actual use of Miracle Mineral Solution he was a supporter of Kerri Rivera — the subject of forthcoming post.

Earlier this year at the AutismOne quackiest Bradstreet bamboozles the watchers with so-called research and questionable conclusions and facts. His modus operandi was the selling of false hope and ensuring the continued pathologising of Autism.

Above is one of his several talks at the conference. If you have the stomach for it you can watch it, I don’t necessarily recommend you doing so as it is full of quackery and rubbish. However, it is here available if you would like to. What is clear is that he was extremely skilled at putting people at ease and romancing them to his point of view. A true snake oil purveyor plying their trade.

For a good starting point to go further into looking into Bradstreet’s treatments and so-called work the Wikipedia entry on him is a good jumping off point, here is a link to it. Clearly Wikipedia is not an exhaustive or scholarly credible place to research but it is in fact a place to begin.

Autism industry sites that continue to purvey the view of autism as a horrible disease that needs to be cured such as the Age of Autism, speak of being struck silent at Bradstreet’s death and have eulogised him with phrases like:

Like you, we read of Dr. Jeff Bradstreet’s death and were struck silent. A stalwart leader in treating autism, really helping families, his loss is huge in our community.

It verges on worship and is deeply disturbing. Particular in light of such statements as that by the United States Justice system who have made comments about Bradstreet’s treatment and practice as:

he April 29, 2000 hair test for mercury demonstrated a low level of mercury in Colten’s hair, but one within the reference range of normal for the laboratory, and one well below the 90th percentile for U.S. children ages six to eight.” In addition, Vowell stated, “The more disturbing question is why chelation was performed at all, in view of the normal levels of mercury found in the hair, blood and urine, its apparent lack of efficacy in treating Colten’s symptoms, and the adverse side effects it apparently caused.” — Barrett, Stephen (15 March 2009). “”Autism Specialist” Blasted by Omnibus Special Master”. Quackwatch. Retrieved 24 August 2013.

It is clear to me, and I am sure to many, that whilst the death of Dr Bradstreet is a sad occurrence, the autistic community, and in particular autistic children are safer now that he has passed away.

The next instalment of this will investigate the so called Angel Kerri Rivera, who dispensed Chlorine Dioxide as a so called cure to what she describes as the symptoms known as Autism.

I hope to write this next instalment tomorrow. So I hope you will await it with interest.

Let us not pretend, Jeff Bradstreet was no hero, but very much a villain to the autistic community.

Thanks for reading.

Unity it’s important!

Previously in my posts I have written about the issue of the multiple communities around Âûtism and Âûtistic people. I don’t resile from the reality of these different communities but, I would contend that these communities need to be much more united than they are in fact are.

Today I saw another situation on social media where the divide was yet again present. Where a perhaps misguided but likely good intentioned campaign came into the spotlight. This particular campaign was named #silentselfie and the idea was to raise awareness for Autistic children by having people take a selfie of themselves with their hands over their mouth. Apparently this was meant to portray support for those that don’t speak with their mouthparts.

This campaign was misguided because it is a fact that speaking with mouthparts is not the only way of communicating. It may be the most common and it may be in some respects the most convenient. But it is not the only and necessarily always the best.

The people who were responsible for this campaign attracted the ire of some Autistic people, who suggested that the campaign was unhelpful and in fact hurtful to them. These autistic voices were met with justifications and denials that their point was valid. As often happens in the world of social media, escalation was swift. Within a few hours the campaign was dropped and there was much comment on the organisers page. The most unfortunate part of this was when autistic voices commented they were more often than not quickly deleted and banned from further comments.

I was one of those voices unable to comment. I thought my comment was fair, and, it was in reference to the fact that it didn’t seem right that people were being silenced. As I couldn’t comment I watched the comments evolved with some distress. My distress was seeing my fellow autistics silenced, accused of being less than capable of understanding and other delightful things. Clearly the passion was high. But the most important thing that is an issue in my view is the absolute divisiveness I saw.

Personally I think the campaign was quite silly, I could not see what it would do to actually help anyone. A key point made by autistics was that we don’t want awareness we want acceptance. A key point by the families and carers of autistics was that awareness was needed and that this was a positive way of doing it.

I could go further into this and analyse the to and fro but I don’t see any value in that and I do think it would in fact only further entrench division.

I will not shirk the responsibility to speak for Âûtistics. It is an important advocacy thing to do. I will not shirk away from that in any way, and in saying that I was devastated again to see my fellow autistics silenced by some that are raising the future autistic adults in our society.

We gather around Âûtism. Âûtistic people, families of Âûtistic people. Friends of Âûtistic people. Yes we gather around this thing called autism. We gather around it to see the best lives possible for Âûtistic people. We gather around calling a halt on the cure culture that does not help Autistic people. We gather around to stop the abuse of Âûtistic people through biomedical and therapeutical actions which are dangerous and harmful. We gather around to speak out for a positive narrative in the media and from the peak autism bodies and dispense with the negative narrative. We gather around to lobby our governments for services and support for Âûtistic people, their carers, their families, their children. We gather around this thing called Âûtism.

The operative word here is we. We, yes we, must move forward together. Autistics. Allistics. Neurodivergent and Neurotypicals. Together We can achieve much. That old saying is a truism:

United we stand divided we fall.

It really is easy to find things we disagree about. It really is easy for us to find the fault in each others arguments. It really is. But what is the benefit. I think, no I know, we all need to do a better job of listening to each other. I as an Autistic need to do a better job of listening to my Allistic family members, friends, colleagues etc. And at the same time they need to do a better job of listening to me too. It cuts both ways. It really does.

I am convinced that overall the absolute majority of parents out there want the very best for their autistic kids. I am equally convinced that the same is true for the autistic people that try to talk to them. But, we seem to each have our own set of earplugs in. We seem to effectively preach to our own choir, but not so good at singing to the choir next door.

It’s time to retune our voices to be heard by each other. Let’s link ourselves together because in doing this we can achieve amazing things, stupendous things. I offer my allistic allies and friends my arm to link with, I thank those that have already taken it and I ask those that haven’t will you take it?

Names can shame.

Well any of my followers will know that i have spoken about language and how we use it. How that’s important. How Identity first language really is a big thing for me.

It was brought to my attention in recent that the name of this blog is a little off putting and decisive to some. Let me explain a little.

NT NOWAY — It always stood for Neurotypical No Way? But it did have a question mark. You can’t really have a question mark in the domain name so that got dropped.

It was never meant to be a long the lines of No way do I want to be a neurotypical. As if that was a bad thing. Well I don’t want to be a neurotypical if I am honest, but not in a divisive superior way. In a way that it would mean I would not be me.

What I mean here is that I am not NT so I can’t be NT and to pretend I am is not being true to myself.

So if that’s not what it meant what does it mean?

It grew as a name I dreamed up when I was trying to work out who I was, in the period of self reflection and exploring diagnosis and eventually identifying as Âûtistic. It was and still is in my mind a statement of being. A statement that I am no way a neurotypical. I just ain’t.

This was an exploratory statement. It represented my journey. And perhaps you will find that journey if you go back to the really old posts.

I want to be clear. In my mind we are all human, Allistic and Âûtistic together. Neurotypical and Neurodivergent together. We walk together in this world. We may not share neurology, we may be different but neither of us are less. Just as the Autistic says with pride I am different not less, it is equally true for the neurotypical.

I had a difficult conversation with some true allies of Âûtistics. Who felt the need to bring the issue that the name seemed to convey divisiveness and superiority. That it could alienate others. This has never been my goal. My goal is to highlight the plight, the human rights of autistics in particular but not to degrade those very same rights of non autistics. That would only be a perfect case of a reverse discrimination. And that is not me at all.

So where to from here? That has been the question of my subconscious as I slept overnight. Many will know I have a Facebook page in addition to this blog. The page is called Proud Autistic Living, and so my inclination is to go change the name of ntnoway to proud autistic living. I would love your feedback on this idea.

Indeed I would love to here if you feel you have an idea for a name that goes with the blog, it’s feel and message. I am open to ideas.

Love to hear from you.

Social Media SH*TSTORMS

Wow, what a day. Social media Shitstorm. started when I awoke this morning and at 10:15pm it’s still going. Yesterday’s blog entry sparked it off. It really took off in a whole bunch of directions. The most prominent was that of he use of the publicly shared image from Facebook on my post here.

I made an error of judgement on not pixelating or blurring or whiting out the face. For that I am sorry and I did make moves to rectify this.

Much could be said about the appropriateness of using it or not using it. The legal implications or not. Whether it was right to call it out or not. But that’s not what I want to talk about in this post.

What I do want to talk about though is the little fact that The Internet is Forever. Yes. You post it to the internet. Whether it’s Facebook, twitter, google plus or whatever. It is forever. It will exist forever somewhere, ready to be used by someone. That’s just the way it is. Whether this situation is ideal, right, or wrong is actually irrelevant.

Every website ever produced exists somewhere. It really does.

Microsoft website — Circa 1996

Hewlett Packard again Circa 1996

Google 1999 — Yes there was an internet before google.

Oh look it’s the now ubiquitous Facebook. 2005

And here is the Netscape site from 1996.

There is a little website called the wayback machine, it allows you to go back and see what sites looked like. The same site also has a whole lot of other things. Check it out. It’s called The internet archive. And it all goes to show that it really is true the internet really is forever.

So where am I going with this, you may wonder. Well may you wonder. I am making a point here. The point is to think twice, three times or more times before you post things online. Especially when it is your kids.

Autism groups seem to be a particular place where inappropriate photos are at times the norm rather than the exception. And yes I’m talking nudity, faeces smearing, kids in baths, kids in nappies, etc etc etc. It is all there.

I have experienced a shit storm of criticism for re-posting the photograph of the boy who had the Autism hair cut, yet the mother who posted it was praised and applauded. It don’t make a lot of sense to me.

On top of this I appeal to the Autism parents out there to please try to listen to the Autistics that say, this is not okay to do to your child. Please listen. We care. Remember, please, we are the community that your children are growing into. We care about their wellbeing. We care that they get the chance to be honoured as valuable human beings, able to be who they are.

We really do care. Yes we get angry, because we see their rights ignored and set aside. We really do care, yes we are critical, to the point, but no we don’t mean to be nasty. We see our brother and sister Âûtistics dignity taken from them and in ways that seem to be more about the parents right to post and choose than about the child’s right to human dignity, respect and privacy.

I implore you autism parents. Please think once twice three times and then some more before you post about your child’s meltdown, their poop smear, their whatever it is that’s a bit quirky. Remember that that pic you post in a matter of moments can travel the world and back and by the time your young charge lines up outside their classroom their classmates have ripe material to bully and ridicule them.

Autism parents, all parents. Please think before you post. And please. Remember it’s not always all about you.

I ain’t no superhero

I ain’t no superhero, and as far as I am concerned no parent is!

Maybe this sounds a bit counter to the culture of the Autism parent community, but I have to say it, because there is this thing, that doesn’t really make sense, that autism parents are super parents.

You know what. It’s a little bit bullshit.

Let me be clear that I am not saying that parenting is easy, that parenting any child is easy, that parenting an autistic child does not have it’s challenges. Well parenting any child has its challenges. But none of this makes a parent a superhero, or a super parent, or better than any other parent, or any other so-called class of parent.

It really is just a little bit bullshit.

Now I’m an Autistic dad.

I have a failed marriage.

I have a second marriage.

I have a 21 year old Âûtistic daughter with significant needs, she has significant brain physiology issues including no Corpus Callosum.

I have an 18 year old Neurotypical daughter.

I have a 9 year old Âûtistic daughter.

My former wife has abandoned my two older girls for her new partner.

So as you can see I have my challenges when it comes to family life. But wait there’s more.

My 21 year old was sexually abused by her mothers boyfriend.

In addition to her already challenging situation she deals with seizures and a large cocktail of medication to keep this in check.

So yes, I have a pretty full on, challenging, eventful family life.

But you know what I am not in any way a super hero, a super parent a super anything. To say anything different or to act like anything different is just a little bit bullshit.

I’m just a dad doing my best to be a dad to my girls, amidst the challenges and the triumphs. That’s all. And I challenge the idea that there really is anything different to that. Sure there is less than that, people that opt out of their parenting responsibilities. But that’s not what I am on about here. I am on about people that are putting their best forward in parenting their children.

There is no supermoms, superdads, there just isn’t.

Being an Autism parent (which is a stupid label anyway) It’s a parent of an autistic child, that’s what it is. This is not any more special than any other type of parent. Is it really reasonable to claim it is somehow better than:

A parent of a paraplegic?

A parent of a Cystic Fibrosis child?

A parent of a child who has cerebral palsy?

A parent of a plain old neurotypical child? (who of course is not plain or typical at all).

I’ve got to say, of course it isn’t. To claim it is really is just a little bit bullshit.

Today I visited a Facebook group I like to refer to as Hell Group. There’s a reason for that, and that is the absolute pervasiveness of the super parent syndrome. It is so pervasive that Autistic adults are regularly silenced and bullied by the self proclaimed Autism-Moms. It is very common to see posts about vaccine injury and associated tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist evangelically pushed.

It really is an experience that is hard to describe just how surreal and terrible it is. Today interacted with a post proclaiming that the Amish have a low rate of autism, and a low rate of vaccination so it must be vaccines causing autism. The thread became long, loud, and vitriolic quite quickly. Conspiracy theorist blogs were posted as evidence, rational analysis was treated with contempt and anecdote was proclaimed as undeniable evidence.

Another post was that of a parent, an autism mom, who in getting her son ready for school decided to ensure that the teacher was under no misconception about her child being autistic shaved the word autism and a puzzle piece into his hair. I was dumbfounded by this, as I would have thought most people would. However on last look this particular image had over 250 comments, most in support of this action, and over 1650 likes. I am just a little bit gobsmacked by this, that any parent actually could consider this a good thing to do and that so many would support and encourage it. It’s just quite unbelievable.

A third post, which I chose not to interact with was a photo of a child naked standing on the sink. It was slightly pixelated, but it was absolutely clear what the picture was. It again was another terrible thing. The post was there apparently to request support in working out how to stop the child climbing on the sink. Okay, fair enough, but why the picture it’s totally unnecessary.

What’s all this got to do with the superhero thing. Well it seems to me, that this whole superhero motif, is a factor in somehow giving tacit permission that it be okay to post these terrible types of pictures, to totally expose your children on the internet. To reveal everything about them for the whole world to see.

When challenged about this oversharing a typical response is that it is awareness raising, that it is to help others or similar reasoning.

Again, it’s a little bit bullshit. Actually it’s a lot bullshit.

In the end I am not a super parent. And neither is anyone else. We are all just humans, doing our best, journeying through the challenges doing our best to make sense of them. Enjoying and celebrating the triumphs and hoping there will be many more of those triumphs.

Superparents? No bloody way. Just parents. That’s it just parents. Well not just parents, just parents who damn well love their kids to bits and doing the darn well best they can.

So please remember. Super parents.

It’s just a little bit bullshit! Or, perhaps a bloody lot bullshit!

This shit is just not okay.

[Content Warning — ABA — ECT]

Today I came across a post online of another Âûtistic blogger known as Autistic Hoya, giving evidence before a court in regard to the Judge Rotenburg Centre. You can read about them on their website, which I am utterly convinced is a somewhat sanitised version of what the reality of the things that happen there. Here is a link to their website. If you head over there you will see that they promote the fact that they use ABA therapy as a treatment plan.

They advertise also they reject no one on the basis of extreme behaviour. This in itself would seem to be an admirable thing, however when one scratches the surface of what the so called treatment plans of ABA consist of and the way in which it is implemented, you will most likely be horrified.

This short video from Fox News is something of an eye opener.

This gives a little bit of information, not much but enough to spark outrage at what this centre believes is reasonable treatment and therapy to be inflicted on children and young people. It is just absolutely terrible and disgusting.

Here is the video of Autistic Hoya giving her evidence…

A young person here has been subjected to Electric Shock Therapy (ECT) against their will, whilst restrained, whilst screaming for relief, for several hours. Whilst staff laugh.

This is despicable. This is terrible. Disgusting. Abuse. Nothing other than abuse.

How does this happen?

We are here at this stage because of the elevation of ABA as a so-called evidence based therapy for Autism. In fact even it is claimed the only evidence based therapy. The big issue here is that the so-called evidence is all based, it all comes from within the ABA industry. There is no real peer reviewed independent evidence that corroborates these claims. We are left to accept what the industry says about itself. This is not acceptable and should not be allowed to be the case.

ABA itself is a behaviour based therapy that is rooted deeply in the work of Pavlov (yes the one with the dogs), B.F. Skinner and Lovaas. It is purely behavioural. It is not holistic, it does not take into account the internal life and motivations, feelings and experiences of the person exhibiting the behaviour in question.

ABA at it’s heart says that by training we will change the behaviour you exhibit because in our view it is undesirable. Essentially the goal then is to change behaviour that is undesirable. What that means in terms of Âûtistic people is behaviours like stimming should be eliminated, repetitive should be avoided, rigidity should be killed off. Social skills must be adhered to, communication with mouthparts is the only desirable form of communication.

Inherent within ABA is compliance training and aversion therapies. These things are on the books of the ABA governing bodies as acceptable components of an ABA therapy regime. Forget for a moment whether it is right to try to change an Autistic persons behaviour or not and simply ask the question of yourself, would I want my Neurotypical child exposed to these aversion therapies, or this compliance training. I would suggest you would answer no?

What does this have to do with the Judge Rotenberg Centre, well this horrible ECT treatment is an approved ABA aversion therapy.

One thing that will happen in communicating with many parents of Autistic children is that they will say their child loves their ABA, they love their therapist. This may be true, but does this make it right? It is not hard to see that a child that is trained in a behavioural therapy to enjoy themselves will in fact look like they enjoy themselves. It just stands to reason.

Another response is well that’s old ABA my ABA is not like that ABA. Of course one would hope that was true, but in reality ABA is ABA. Unfortunately the waters are muddied because as ABA is so-called evidence based it is the therapy that is often the only one that funded under insurance situations, therefore, what we have is a whole bunch of things that are not ABA called ABA so that they are funded under insurance plans. Crazy but true.

The most unfortunate thing about all of this is that even though there are many cases of recipients of ABA developing PTSD and many many autistic adults speak out about ABA the attraction of it in Autism parents seems to be relentless. It is again a factor of the relentless negative narrative that autism is given in media and by peak bodies. In order to change this the narrative must change.

After all that, all I can say is that ABA must be stopped, until it is horrendous practices like those at the Judge Rotenberg Centre will continue unabated. Until ABA is exposed for the damaging dog training it is these horrendous practices will continue. And perhaps most importantly, until the negative view of autism is changed to a narrative of difference and neurodiversity these horrendous practices will continue.

We must accept as a society as a whole that autism is difference not disease, difference not disorder. Yes we are #DifferentNotLess and #WeDontNeedACure.

So who is it that lacks empathy then?

I wonder how many times in my life I will see ‘that’ myth presented about Âûtistic people. Perpetrated by media, by ignorance, by people that want to hurt others, and of course people just repeating what they heard. It’s presented by all these and others too, by people that have read incorrect and inaccurate information, by it being presented in screen media. Even at this very moment as I sit I see it presented in a popular British crime show.

If I am talking about Âûtistic people and myths, of course I could be talking about any number of different myths. It could be the savant myth, the intellectually disabled myth, the functioning label myths, the verbal communication myth, the social skills myth. As you can see there are many myths that are perpetuated upon Âûtistic people.

Purple Emoticon with non descriptor expression

The myth I am talking about right now though is not any of those myths, it’s the myth of empathy, or to be more precise lack of empathy. This myth goes along the lines of Âûtistic people have no empathy, they are incapable of empathy, they are incapable of showing empathy. It could be any one or all of those descriptions. It is well and truly perpetuated all over the place. It’s a bit like the old furphy of Âûtistics can’t lie.

It is nothing more than a complete load of bullshit.

Empathy is defined as:

empathy

If I am to speak from my own experience in regard to empathy, I can only say that I am in fact a deeply empathic person. In fact, I believe Âûtistic people in general are too. We in fact feel empathy very deeply. We connect very deeply with the emotional stimuli that surround and bombard us. The sensory, the non verbal, the very feeling of the room. Personally I find this occurs to me to a very large degree, and in fact I sense this deeply even in terms of viewing on screen media. I often find myself deeply impacted by the emotion portrayed on film to a point that I am often left with tears running down my face and discover I am the only one in the room to be in that state. This is most commonly an emotional response and connection with the characters being portrayed.

It is then, my view that Âûtistic are deeply empathetic and feel empathy very intensely, to the point it can in fact be overloading and be a catalyst in triggering the descent to meltdown or shutdown.

However, it is also fair to say that it is not quite that simple and it would be foolish to not acknowledge that whilst I am able to experience and feel empathy very deeply and strongly, that I do in fact have difficulty in expressing that empathy in appropriate ways. I suspect that this is the case for many Âûtistics too.

The thing is that the so-called professionals in Autism don’t seem to actually want to take the time to find out how things impact us at all, but to simply focus on what they see as the outward behaviour, or lack of expression and the silly things like that.

Yes, I have difficulty in expressing empathy and the like and, in fact, even really knowing what is an appropriate response to that in a given situation. This I believe is also made even more difficult because in an already highly charged emotional situation sensory input can cloud and impact the situation even more so.

To give an example of this. I woke the other morning to discover a friend had passed away. This was a very difficult and deeply felt experience, yet my outward expression was not very demonstrative. The friend in question was someone I knew through a local running group and so we shared many mutual contacts. It was arranged that at the local parkrun event held yesterday that a small memorial would be held. With a level of trepidation I committed to be there for this occasion, even though it has been several months since being at this local weekly event.

I say it was with trepidation because with already experiencing a challenge in knowing how to express my empathy regarding this situation, I was aware that there was a high chance that a lot of demonstrative expression of loss, confusion, pain and grief would be present. In addition to this was my own sense of sensory input. Knowing that their was likely to be a lot of hugging and the like was that extra layer that I was concerned could in fact bring me undone.

I bring this up because it is relevant to my own personal experiences over the last few days, but also because it is one of those myths that is used on occasion as a way of dismissal and silencing of Âûtistic people, by playing the ‘lack of empathy’, or the ‘can’t show empathy’, or ‘has no capacity for empathy’ card.

In tandem with my own experiences over these last few days, I have seen my friend, a relentless campaigner against the abuse of Âûtistic people through quackery and dangerous and poisonous treatments tarred with this brush as a way to try to silence and sideline her. Amanda Mary Jewell of Mother Nature and You has relentlessly attacked through a large volume of twitter tweets, Facebook posts, blogs and Youtube videos Fiona O’Leary by playing the empathy card. Using the empathy card to assert that in fact Fiona is unable to understand, reason, or in fact have anything important to say because she is diseased with Aspergers Syndrome and unable to have empathy and understanding.

Let’s not forget of course, that this horrible Amanda Mary the former porn star, is a purveyor of poisonous bleach treatments, unregulated and unauthorised treatments, promotes and supports the use of Kerri Rivera’s CD Bleach Enema protocol, and has recently run away to the Island of Dominica. Not only this she promotes herself as a “Senior Cancer Researcher” of 15 years experience, and proclaims pseudo science quackery and conspiracy theories about vaccinations and mainstream medicine in general.

The sheer outrageousness of this is ridiculous. On the one hand we have a campaigner for Âûtistic people against dangerous treatments perpetrated against many children. Who apparently has no empathy.

On the other we have Amanda Mary Jewell. — Former porn star, so called cancer researcher and purveyor of poison. Who apparently is endowed with all the required empathy a human needs.

It seems a bit arse about to me.

If any one in this situation is lacking Empathy, it sure as hell is not Fiona O’Leary.

You don’t need to try to change or heal your child.

What if I’m Okay.

What if I am not broken.

What if there isn’t anything wrong with me.

What then.

What then?

What then do I think about that therapy?

What then do I think about the bullying?

What then do I think about all those lost friends?

What then about those times I found myself the odd one out;

The one left holding the bag and taking the wrap?

What does that all mean?

What do I do with that?

Where do I go from here?

It’s about a year now since I was formally diagnosed as Âûtistic. The above is an example of some of the thought processes I went through in coming to accaptance of who I am, of what it is to take ownership of the reality of being Âûtistic. It took some time. It really did. Months it took. It included some soul searching, a lot of thinking, a lot of feeling and a lot of walking around in something of a mental daze.

The mental daze was really exacerbated by the persistent, relentless, and horrible dialogue of the cure culture that is pervasive in the “Autism” industry.

Yes it is an industry. An industry where peak bodies raise funds and talk of finding cures and causes, where they underhandedly support research that is really no more than eugenics.

An industry where blood products are passed off as cures when they are really nothing but dangerous quackery.

An industry where industrial bleach is sold as a miracle cure and a book with no evidentiary basis is and details how to abuse children with a so called recovery protocol is allowed to be sold on massive websites such as Amazon.com

An industry where false claims of recovery are touted as evidence.

An industry where faeces implants are promoted as cures.

An industry where stem cell implants are promoted as cures.

An industry where people are subjected to hours in hyperbaric oxygen chambers.

An industry which is dominated by conspiracy theories and woo woo pseudo science.

Yes it is an industry that is for sure.

It’s an industry where former porn stars are given air play on on media channels all over the place and able to build followings around such things. Where these porn stars are given credence for so called recoveries taken as gospel just on there say so. An industry where these porn stars run websites that sell poison, where these porn stars pass themselves off as researchers and scientists and the media and so forth don’t seem to bat an eyelid to it.

Yes it’s an industry.

Where these same porn stars are able to found organisations and be given hundreds of thousands of dollars to promote their quackery and abusive treatments, given awards for their so called work.

Yes it is no less an industry than a factory that makes cupboards, or a factory that builds cars, or a tourist agency selling flights.

An industry based on lies.

Yes lies.

A web of lies.

That Autism is a disease.

That Autism is caused by vaccines.

That Autism is caused by parasites.

That Autism is caused by rope worms.

That it’s because of bad parents.

That Autistic people are unstable, mentally ill, have no empathy or emotions.

Lies lies and more lies.

It’s time for a change. It’s definitely time for a change.

A change in the belief systems. A change in the dialogue and narrative that promotes these lies, that repeats its lies. It’s time to end the bullshit and speak the truth.

Autistics don’t need to be changed.

Autistics don’t need to be healed.

Autistics don’t need to be recovered

Autistics are just fine how they are.
Autistics don’t need to be changed into neurotypical people.

Autism is a neurological difference. It is a disability because of the impact that living in the world. It is not a sickness.

Acceptance and inclusion is the key, not cures, not therapies that try to change us. Acceptance. Just acceptance. Simply pure unqualified acceptance.

Don’t go trying to change your kids, just accept them, love them, and support them to make their way in the world and achieve everything they possibly can. They might just surprise you.
